Route 34: Embracing Cultures is a visionary and ambitious project celebrating the Commonwealth Games and inspired by the 11 Caribbean islands that participated in Birmingham22.

Spectacular costumes were commissioned and created by Clary Salandy (Mahogany Arts) inspired again by the 11 Caribbean islands and countries that came to the Games.

The brief was to replicate the costumes digitally as an augmented reality experience to allow people to wear them virtually. We carefully recreated each costume using the latest modelling techniques and texturing practices to ensure the highest quality reproductions.

The 3D models we created have been developed into a stunning augmented reality experience that allows people to wear each costume virtually.

We were approached by Abingdon County Hall Museum to bring an extinct marine reptile back to life virtually.
We recreated the Pliosaur, a magificient sea creature that lived in the shallow tropical sea that is now Abingdon more than 150 million years ago.
Using the space available, we  created a slick immersive experience to allow visitors to virtually approach  the Pliosaur swimming inside a viewing tank.

We collaborated with the team at the Birmingham2022 Commonwealth Games to work on Perry, their magnificent mascot.

As a leading 3D and XR studio, we were tasked with bringing their games mascot, Perry, to life through animation and immersive technology.

The key objectives were:-

– Create a lifelike animated version of the already brilliantly designed Perry through animation and immersive technology.

– Ensure he could be viewed online as well as through a specially created Instagram filter.

– Make him digitally accessible for everyone to enjoy, not just those on social media.

– Create a digital Perry that could ‘travel’ globally, and effortlessly generate community engagement without having to put people on the ground to facilitate it.

We achieved all this through the creation of a standalone Instagram filter to allow people to easily engage with AR Perry through the app. The IG filter actively encouraged users to interact with the AR Perry & gain engagement with the #PoseWithPerry selfie hashtag.

We also created WebAR and WebGl versions that allowed people to access Perry from any web browser. This all ran alongside the online 3D interactive version which allowed users to play and rotate Perry as well as learn more about his striking features.

Perry had one of the most successful launches of any project we have been involved with gaining millions of likes & shares across social media during the launch period.

We launched our training division, XR Academy in May 2021 when we partnered Niyo Enterprise on their XR Bootcamp.

The 20-week XR Bootcamp was created for black women in Birmingham to take their immersive skills from zero to hero and help them break into or scale up in the tech industry.

We created this bootcamp from the ground up and ran three sessions each week helping the students gain a sound understanding of XR including Unity, lighting, sound, Blender, coding, programming & VR setup.

The range of projects covered subjects including science, fashion, retail, arts & culture and were unveiled to much acclaim, at a special showcase evening organised by Niyo Enterprise.

We completed the course with a 95% certification pass rate for students achieving certifications in immersive technologies and programming.

This collaborative project between Birmingham (Shaheen Ahmed), Dhaka (Jafrin Gulshan), Lahore (Saba Khan) and Taran3D was initiated as a project for Transforming Narratives, to trace back routes of cross-wing exchange through artists’ friendships, migration and stories of reintegration.

With the fragmented art history of Pakistan, the project investigates cracks that were created because of the migrations of cultural practitioners in the post-Partition era to Bangladesh and UK. The archive will trace movements of artists who were actively engaged but relocated because of shifting borders or for better prospects.

We were involved with this project to turn the accumulated data and research into a physical 3D piece of artwork that utilises the patterns and symbols from three regions. A proposed interactive space with marked timelines, events, excerpts from personal interviews, human movements will give a spatial mapping of events and people.

This proposed War Memorial was  designed in order to commemorate the fallen soldiers from India who contributed towards campaigns in the British Indian Army in many global settings including WW1 & WW2.

We were commissioned to design and visualise a new public statue representing the contributions of the Indian Soldiers.

We provided digital 3D sculpting, accurate costume replication and variations on character pose and bronze finish.

The statue was granted planning permission in September 2020 and will be prominently installed in Leicester’s Victoria Square in 2021.

Sunrise of Frognal House provides luxury life-enabling care for older adults.

The home at Frognal House is a stunning Jacobean manor, set in seven acres of beautifully landscaped gardens offering the perfect environment for care.

Taran3D were asked to bring their new interior design scheme to life with photorealistic architectural visualisation.

Working closely with their in-house interior designers, we were able to realise the brief and were delighted with the results we achieved.

Sensosis is an immersive Virtual Reality experience inspired by the work of science fiction author Stanislaw Lem. Within the experience, you meet a friendly alien who needs your help understanding the human race.

This project has been supported by the British Arts Council and it explores means of bringing the liveliness of performance into Virtual Reality medium.

For this project we worked alongside actor and performer Anna Neirobisz, helping with look devlopment, design and rigging of alien character and additional art assets.

In 2020 we were approached by STEAMhouse, Birmingham’s centre for innovation and creation to collaborate on VR Birmingham.

As part of DigiCities with BBC Academy, VR Birmingham was created to provide valuable insight into how you can explore using immersive technology within your individual projects. Regardless of whether you are a complete beginner or have years of experience in AR/VR, VR Birmingham if for everyone.

The VR Birmingham series of events offers the perfect opportunity to share and learn about the creative opportunities that AR/VR technologies can present to you as an individual or business.

In November 2020, Taran appeared as a guest speaker at the VR Birmingham – Discovering New Experiences event, discussing his experience of researching and developing immersive media applications with 3D and game technologies for a range of industries as well as demonstrating the importance of the VR user experience through one of our own case studies.

Impressed with this knowledge and approach, STEAMhouse asked Taran to host the remainder of the series which included events covering a wide range of topics such as World Building in VR, Storytelling in Virtual Reality, Discovering New Experiences and VR for Film & TV.

VR Birmingham also gave attendees direct access to an abundance of expert guest speakers, allowing Taran to share the screen with amazing personalities including Keiken Collective, Jamie Bakewell of Bigtooth Studios, Andy Leeke, Senior Creative at Metro Boulot Dodo, artist Anna Nierobisz.

VR Birmingham Attendee Feedback

“I really enjoyed Taran’s and Ania’s presentation yesterday evening. I’m a member of STEAMhouse and really looking forward to following your practice! always leaves these VR talks very excited!! as an artist. I’ve had ideas but always felt the technology was out of reach!”
Attendee
“I really appreciated the breadth of questions you asked at the end. I was concerned as someone who is quite new to VR that everything would go over my head, but the questions at the end really helped to fill in any gaps I had and asked things I wanted to know, yet didn’t realise I did :)”
Attendee
