A traditional Sikh Dhal hide Shield modelled in 3D Studio Max and Zbrush, textured in Photoshop and rendered in Vray.

Finally got a chance to texture this shield I modelled a while back. Took me a while to crack the normal maps and texturing process but finally getting there.

First 3D Print

My first 3D print of the Harimandir Sahib Gumut (dome) printed in SLS nylon by 3DprintUK and is 4 inches high (10cm). This was done as a quick test for future projects and also to explore converting virtual 3d models into real physical objects. I was very pleased with the quality. Subtle details can be lost on 3D prints so I will start to exaggerate details in future prints and also thicken up thin parts of the mesh.

In comparison here is a sample from a makerbot home 3D printer. I wasn’t as impressed with the Makerbot print but I can see how useful it can be for producing prototypes.

Sousson Pata Short Sword, india 1800

A 3D model of an indian Sousson Pata short sword, which has an S curved blade and is heavily influenced by the kukhri. I modeled this a few years back and it was a mess. I tried to use it to dress a character I was working on recently so I decided to remodel it and use it to work out a good 3DS max to zbrush workflow for detailing. I have almost cracked this workflow and also found a few gems along the way like the unwrapping in zbrush – which is brilliant by the way. Working all this out took ages as I had to go back and forth so many times but I’m hoping I can replicate the process easily and get it all right in one go.

I worked on this model while doing a game character course with Alex Troufanov who works for ubisoft on the Assassins Creed games. Thoroughly enjoyed the course and learnt so much along the way. All the armor patterns were painted by hand and I used some Punjabi koftgari examples as reference. below is a brief overview of the process we went through

  • Anatomy sculpting
  • hard surface modeling
  • sculpting hi-res detail
  • Re-topology
  • Baking and Normal Maps
  • texture painting

Hires detailing Shield – Dhaal

I have pretty much started to remodel everything from scratch in hires without worrying about poly counts anymore. The idea is to create low poly models later and bake the detail into normal maps.

This is a standard Sikh Dhaal which has most of the major details added. It also has varying levels of damage that could be animated. For example, if the shield in the game is hit too many times by opponents then it can visually show gradual damage until it is unusable and another must be found by the player.

Hires Sword Detailing Forward Curved

I have recently been practising digital sculpting and decided to dig up this old sword model to see if I could add surface details using zbrush

I had to remodel some of the parts as the original low resolution model didn’t include all sections of the sword.

It’s not mega detailed but its good enough for a first try and will try again to see if I can improve upon it.

I find the architectural details of Harimandir Sahib (Amritsar)very interesting, so I started to look at some the main elements of the structure here is a 3D model of the most common type of smaller domes which follow the perimeter of the roof.

A friend of mine runs a Sikh helpline which provides help and support for young Sikhs facing various problems. It’s a great service and a lot of young people have benefited from its anonymous support. My friend was producing a video promo to raise awareness of the main issues faced by people who call the support line and he wanted a higher resolution version of the logo and a logo animation ident that could be used on all video promos and marketing materials. Vray to Unity3D Lightmapping

Real-time lighting and shadows are expensive in terms of processing power and speed.  In addition  it never looks as good as a pre-rendered image, which is the primary reason I have been  exploring baking lighting detail, from a pre-rendered image, onto a 3D model which can be used in a real-time engine.

The image on the left is a test scene rendered in 3dsMax with Vray whilst the image on the right is a baked version of the scene in the Unity3D engine.  I was exploring this as part of a solution for an interactive object viewer which I am in the process of developing, but more on that in a later post. This test is using the Unity3d lightmap shader with VrayDiffuseMap in the diffuse slot andVrayRawTotalLightingMap in the lightmap slot. Read More
